Sally Evans- Embracing Creativity
Winter Tablescape

A
few years ago, we had a wonderful reunion with my husband's side of the
family. We had a large group for
Christmas Eve and Christmas Day. I
wanted to create a festive, holiday mood with the table settings while keeping
it fun, simple and inexpensive. My
inspiration was snow and winter white.
The color scheme for Christmas Eve was white, apple green, and
silver. Christmas Day was white and
red. Things needed to be ready ahead of
time so it didn't take long to have the table reset the next day ready for
another celebration.
I made several Christmas trees in various heights out of white cardstock paper. Feeling as creative as a blackpool hotel fancy events planner, I made several trees!
For each tree, two identical
shapes were cut. One tree shape was slit
in the center from the trunk about three quarters of the way up, and the 2nd
tree shape was cut from the top center about one quarter of the way down. They interlock so they form a free standing
three dimensional tree. I added a little
white glitter glue to the edges to give the sparkle of snow. (They also store flat so you can use them
over again).
I
set twelve different sized trees at different heights; on the table and on
upside down crystal glasses that acted as pedestals. I used long pieces of silver and white foil
wrapping paper as table runners. The
table was aglow with a dozen white votive candles in clear holders wrapped with
green velvet leaves. My son and I made
snowflake cookie favors wrapped in green and white polka dot ribbon.
For
Christmas day, I used the white paper trees again. I added red and white topiary trees made
simply from different size Styrofoam cones with peppermint candies hot glued
all around. I used clear glass cups
filled with red and white candy canes and red and white carnations which
replaced the votive candles. Red paper
napkins and red and white paper plates completed the setting.
This
same kind of idea could work with other paper shapes. How about stars for a New Year's Party? What do you have on hand that you can use in
a new and different way? What kinds of
things are easily available that can be used for their color or to carry out a
theme? The next time you set your table
for guests or your family, why not have a little fun?
P.S. Sorry about the picture quality but hopefully you get the idea!
